  • “I thoroughly enjoyed utilizing the resources from the "Novel Study Indigenous Literature: Moon of the Crusted Snow." It greatly aided me in creating engaging lessons and activities that my students genuinely enjoyed. The materials provided a rich foundation for exploring themes, characters, and cultural elements present in the novel.

  • The kids liked this and learned a lot. It was a great way of breaking down the TRC document which is too big and unweildly for grade 9s on its own. A bit of a scramble for me to update the key, as these things change so fast (ie - how many calls to action have been implemented). I broke mine into groups and then they presented their answers to each other. I'll definitely use this again.

  • This is a great resource for my students! They're not big fans of ELA in general, but these resources helped make our novel study unit a success.

  • This is a great resource for the new Grade 11 Ontario Indigenous English curriculum. I used this as a novel study for my class and we were able to spend the entire 70 minutes talking about the book. Excellent resource!

I have a special interest in Indigenous Education, EDI work, and nature themes. Pedagogically, I love discussion-based learning & project-based learning. This comes through in most resources you will find at West Coast Pages.

  • No. I am a settler on Coast Salish lands and have an Irish, Scottish, and British background.

This is a commonly asked question and I find it interesting that we assume teachers with an interest in Indigenous Education must be Indigenous themselves.

I completed my Masters Degree in Education, specializing in Indigenous Education & Decolonization. I believe we all hold a responsibility to share the stories of our past and learn from them. Indigenous education is Canadian education. Indigenous education is the education of the land you live on.

That being said, my own positioning as non-Indigenous is the reason my novel study resources focus on using books & stories written BY Indigenous authors. You will need to purchase them or find them from your library - meaning, you will need to support the authors themselves. You will never find any specific cultural teachings in my resources - only reading skills, writing skills, and critical thinking questions to guide discussions with learners in your own context.
